Meaningful Mama: Day #298 - Paisley Baby Shower Cupcakes

I was asked to do cupcakes for a friend's baby shower. Of course I was willing. I love this new life, and I love making cupcakes. Good combo. You saw yesterday how you can make cupcake liners out of any paper you want, so click back for a printable to help you make your own. She is doing her baby's room in pink paisley, and the baby shower reflected that. Red velvet is also her favorite, so we made those flavored cupcakes as a family when we made the ones for Abby's class. Remember you can freeze cupcakes. We used the red velvet and cream cheese frosting recipes.

Making Chocolate Paisley Cupcake Toppers

I talked a few days ago about working with candy melts. That is exactly what I used to make these?paisleys.?

I made a printable for the paisleys if you want to use that one. You can use candy melts to create a variety of simple designs.
You lay down the printout of the shape you want onto a cookie sheet or jelly roll pan. Then, lay parchment paper on top of it. Put the melted candy melts in the squeeze bottle. Again, look back at my tips for working with candy melts. Then, outline the shape with the chocolate and fill it in - all coming out of the squeeze bottle.
As this point, I let the chocolate sit in a hot water bath because I could only make one paisley at a time. While your chocolate is bathing, take a flat icing spatula and smooth the chocolate with one steady stroke. You may need to practice a bit to become better at this technique. This is the first time I did it, so there was definitely a learning curve. Working quickly, I added the?dragees (little silver balls...I'll add a link on the bottom) carefully around the edge. You can use tweezers if needed, but I used my fingers and a toothpick to help guide. I continued to be able to make an entire sheet of paisleys, and then I'd stick them in the freezer to harden while I started the next sheet.?
After swirling the cream cheese frosting up, I laid the paisleys on top to complete my design.

Berlusconi confirms will not run in 2013 Italy election

ROME (Reuters) - Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi confirmed on Wednesday he would not lead his People of Freedom (PDL) party in next year's election, ending months of speculation about his political future.

The 76-year-old media magnate said this month he might not stand if withdrawing his candidacy could help centrist and center-right parties come together to form a "moderate" bloc.

But his statement on Wednesday went further, suggesting that a career in frontline politics that began in 1994 may be coming to an end.

"I will not stand for premier again but I remain at the side of younger people who can play and score goals," said the owner of AC Milan football club, who quit as prime minister in November last year during a mounting financial crisis.

"I still have good muscles and some good sense but my role will be to give advice."

The flamboyant Berlusconi, whose reported "bunga bunga" parties won worldwide notoriety, has taken a largely backseat role in politics since he was forced to step down, but he remains the dominant figure within the PDL.

However, his standing with the general public has fallen sharply after an array of sexual and political scandals and an opinion poll last month gave him just 18 percent support, well behind Angelino Alfano, the PDL's party secretary.

The former justice minister, who celebrates his 42nd birthday next week, is the favorite to take the center-right into the election, which must be held no later than April.

However Daniela Santanche, a Berlusconi loyalist from the right wing of the party, said she would also run in a primary ballot to select the candidate for prime minister, which Berlusconi suggested could be held on December 16.

Alfano, considered a moderate, has struggled to contain vicious factional infighting in the party. He faces an early test on Sunday with local elections in his home region of Sicily, which has flirted with bankruptcy this year.

His job has been complicated by corruption scandals which have hit center-right governments in the northern region of Lombardy and in the Lazio region around Rome and further damaged the already dismal image of Italy's political class.

"PLEASE RELAX"

Given Berlusconi's long record of surprises and turnarounds, his statement may still not be the final word, but it was widely welcomed by senior figures in the PDL.

"This move to stand down permits the Italian system as a whole, the government and the political parties, to move forward," former Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said after the statement.

Berlusconi's departure may also make it easier for the PDL to form an alliance with centrist forces which have been deeply suspicious of the former premier as well as others such as its estranged former partners in the pro-devolution Northern League.

The financial crisis facing Italy has eased in recent weeks but markets have been watching closely for signs of what government might emerge after technocrat Prime Minister Mario Monti stands down.

The political situation remains exceptionally confused, with the main parties unable to agree even on an electoral law that will govern next year's ballot, but opinion polls suggest the center-right will struggle.

A survey from the SWG institute last week put PDL support at 14.3 percent, behind the center-left Democratic Party (PD) on 25.9 and the anti-establishment 5 Star Movement of comic Beppe Grillo on 21.

Monti, a former European Commissioner often seen as a potential President of the Republic, sought to ease fears of instability after the election, saying Italy's partners should "please relax".

He said whichever government came after his own would have to respect the commitments Italy had made to the European Union.

Outside Italy Monti is widely perceived to have done a good job since taking over from Berlusconi, but the country remains in deep recession with the economy expected to contract 2.4 percent this year.

(AP) ? A former Goldman Sachs and Procter & Gamble Co. board member once widely respected worldwide for his business smarts was sentenced Wednesday to 2 years in prison for feeding inside information about board dealings with a billionaire hedge fund owner who was his friend.

Rajat Gupta, 63, of Westport, Conn., was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Jed Rakoff, who also ordered him to pay a $5 million fine. The Harvard-educated businessman long respected on Wall Street was one of the biggest catches yet for the federal government in its five-year crackdown on insider trading that has so far resulted in 69 convictions.

Gupta was ordered to report to prison on Jan. 8.

Reading from a statement, he said: "The last 18 months have been the most challenging period of my life since I lost my parents as a teenager.

"I regret terribly the impact of this matter on my family, my friends and the institutions that are dear to me. I've lost my reputation I built for a lifetime. The verdict was devastating."

The dealings by Gupta that were highlighted at his spring trial stemmed from his relationship with Sri Lanka-born Raj Rajaratnam. The one-time billionaire hedge fund boss controlled up to $7 billion in accounts, giving him a firm footprint in the financial markets and influence that impressed someone as widely regarded as Gupta.

"His conduct has forever tarnished a once-sterling reputation that took years to cultivate," U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said after sentencing. "We hope that others who might consider breaking the securities laws will take heed from this sad occasion and choose not to follow in Mr. Gupta's footsteps."

Prosecutors described how Gupta raced to telephone Rajaratnam with stock tips sometimes only seconds after getting them from board conference calls, allowing Rajaratnam to make more than $11 million in illegal profits for him and his investors. Rajaratnam is serving an 11-year prison sentence after his conviction at trial last year.

The narrower insider trading case against Rajaratnam and his co-conspirators resulted in 26 convictions and was described by Bharara as the biggest insider trading case in history, successful in part because of unprecedented use of wiretaps more familiar to juries at mob and drug trials.

Prosecutors say Rajaratnam earned up to $75 million illegally through his trades while Gupta's attorneys point out that their client earned no profits.

At trial, Gupta was convicted of three counts of securities fraud and one count of conspiracy, insider trading charges that prosecutors said should result in a prison sentence of up to 10 years in prison.

The judge said a prison sentence was necessary to send a message to insider traders that "when you get caught, you will go to jail."

Defense attorney Gary Naftalis immediately promised to appeal, telling Rakoff he wants Gupta free pending appealing. The judge did not immediately rule on the request.

Prosecutors accused Gupta, a former chief of the global consulting firm McKinsey & Co. and a onetime director of the huge consumer products company Procter & Gamble, of "above-the-law arrogance" in feeding Rajaratnam inside tips between March 2007 and January 2009.

Goldman Sachs chairman Lloyd Blankfein testified at trial that Gupta appeared to have violated the investment bank's confidentiality policies.

"Gupta's crimes are shocking," the government wrote. "Gupta's crimes are extraordinarily serious and damaging to the capital markets. ... It understandably fuels cynicism among the investing public that Wall Street is rigged and that Wall Street professionals unfairly exploit privileged access to information. This is particularly troubling at a time when there is widespread concern about corruption, greed and recklessness at the highest levels of the financial services industry."

In their presentencing brief, defense lawyers cited Gupta's many good deeds worldwide, saying they were unusual enough to warrant a sentence of probation with instructions to perform community service.

Naftalis told the judge that Gupta had "one of the best reputations on the planet. His loss of reputation is severely strong punishment."

The defense noted that the Rwandan government supported a program in which Gupta would work with rural districts to fight HIV, malaria and extreme poverty and to help provide food security. The lawyers said the Rwandan government would join with a U.S.-based organization already working in the country to ensure effective supervision of Gupta's service.

They also said prison would spoil the efforts by Gupta, who was born in Kolkata, India, to develop new initiatives, including the Urban Institute of India, meant to bring the private sector, academia and the Indian government together to address accelerating migration to India's cities. The more than 400 letters written to the judge on Gupta's behalf included documents signed by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

"The conduct for which he was convicted represents an isolated aberration and a stark departure from this personal history," the lawyers wrote.

At Gupta's trial, which began in May, the government highlighted a Sept. 23, 2008, phone call it said was made from Gupta to Rajaratnam only minutes after Gupta had learned during a confidential conference call about Warren Buffett's planned investment through Berkshire Hathaway of $5 billion in Goldman.

Moments after the phone call ended at 3:55 p.m., Rajaratnam purchased $40 million in Goldman stock ? an 11th hour trade that ended up making him nearly $1 million ? at the height of the financial crisis that had engulfed the country.

In another recorded phone call in 2008, Rajaratnam told one of his traders that he had got a tip "from someone who's on the board of Goldman Sachs" that Goldman was facing an unexpected quarterly loss.

Gupta, prosecutors said, was motivated to help Rajaratnam because he had a financial stake in some of the hedge fund manager's business ventures.

Biology-friendly robot programming language: Training your robot the PaR-PaR way

ScienceDaily (Oct. 23, 2012) ? Teaching a robot a new trick is a challenge. You can't reward it with treats and it doesn't respond to approval or disappointment in your voice. For researchers in the biological sciences, however, the future training of robots has been made much easier thanks to a new program called "PaR-PaR."

Nathan Hillson, a biochemist at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI), led the development of PaR-PaR, which stands for Programming a Robot. PaR-PaR is a simple high-level, biology-friendly, robot-programming language that allows researchers to make better use of liquid-handling robots and thereby make possible experiments that otherwise might not have been considered.

"The syntax and compiler for PaR-PaR are based on computer science principles and a deep understanding of biological workflows," Hillson says. "After minimal training, a biologist should be able to independently write complicated protocols for a robot within an hour. With the adoption of PaR-PaR as a standard cross-platform language, hand-written or software-generated robotic protocols could easily be shared across laboratories."

Hillson, who directs JBEI's Synthetic Biology program and also holds an appointment with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab)'s Physical Biosciences Division, is the corresponding author of a paper describing PaR-PaR that appears in the American Chemical Society journal Synthetic Biology. The paper is titled "PaR-PaR Laboratory Automation Platform." Co-authors are Gregory Linshiz, Nina Stawski, Sean Poust, Changhao Bi and Jay Keasling.

Using robots to perform labor-intensive multi-step biological tasks, such as the construction and cloning of DNA molecules, can increase research productivity and lower costs by reducing experimental error rates and providing more reliable and reproducible experimental data. To date, however, automation companies have targeted the highly-repetitive industrial laboratory operations market while largely ignoring the development of flexible easy-to-use programming tools for dynamic non-repetitive research environments. As a consequence, researchers in the biological sciences have had to depend upon professional programmers or vendor-supplied graphical user interfaces with limited capabilities.

"Our vision was for a single protocol to be executable across different robotic platforms in different laboratories, just as a single computer software program is executable across multiple brands of computer hardware," Hillson says. "We also wanted robotics to be accessible to biologists, not just to robot specialist programmers, and for a laboratory that has a particular brand of robot to benefit from a wide variety of software and protocols."

Hillson, who earlier led the development of a unique software program called "j5" for identifying cost-effective DNA construction strategies, says that beyond enabling biologists to manually instruct robots in a time-effective manner, PaR-PaR can also amplify the utility of biological design automation software tools such as j5.

"Before PaR-PaR, j5 only outputted protocols for one single robot platform," Hillson says. "After PaR-PaR, the same protocol can now be executed on many different robot platforms."

The PaR-PaR language uses an object-oriented approach that represents physical laboratory objects -- including reagents, plastic consumables and laboratory devices -- as virtual objects. Each object has associated properties, such as a name and a physical location, and multiple objects can be grouped together to create a new composite object with its own properties.

Actions can be performed on objects and sequences of actions can be consolidated into procedures that in turn are issued as PaR-PaR commands. Collections of procedural definitions can be imported into PaR-PaR via external modules.

"A researcher, perhaps in conjunction with biological design automation software such as j5, composes a PaR-PaR script that is parsed and sent to a database," Hillson says. "The operational flow of the commands are optimized and adapted to the configuration of a specific robotic platform. Commands are then translated from the PaR-PaR meta-language into the robotic scripting language for execution."

Hillson and his colleagues have developed PaR-PaR as open-source software freely available through its web interface on the public PaR-PaR webserver http://parpar.jbei.org.

"Flexible and biology-friendly operation of robotic equipment is key to its successful integration in biological laboratories, and the efforts required to operate a robot must be much smaller than the alternative manual lab work," Hillson says. "PaR-PaR accomplishes all of these objectives and is intended to benefit a broad segment of the biological research community, including non-profits, government agencies and commercial companies."

Emir of Qatar to be first head of state to visit Gaza

GAZA (Reuters) - The emir of pro-Western Qatar will become the first head of state to enter the blockaded Gaza Strip on Tuesday, in a high-profile visit breaking the isolation of the Iranian-backed Islamist movement Hamas that seized power in 2007.

Sheik Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani is officially visiting the Palestinian enclave to inaugurate reconstruction projects worth over $250 million, which an envoy of his oil-rich, conservative Arab emirate unveiled in Gaza last week.

But his trip will be loaded with political symbolism. The emir will be the first foreign leader to go to Gaza under the rule of Hamas, a militant movement that is outlawed by Israel and the West as a terrorist organization, but whose influence and aspirations in the Middle East conflict may be hard to ignore.

Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh issued a statement confirming the visit and urging "our people to express their good hospitality in welcoming the great visitor of Gaza".

Security was already being reinforced in places where the emir is expected to make a stop on the way from the Egyptian land border crossing at Rafah. Gaza, under partial blockade by Israel and Egypt, has no airport or seaport.

LOW-LEVEL WAR ZONE

Some Palestinians put up Qatari flags in the streets of Gaza city. Others attacked the visit on social networks, questioning Qatar's intentions. Some posted pictures on their Facebook pages of the emir side-by-side with Israeli President Shimon Peres.

Israel and Gaza are in a state of perpetual low-level conflict, marked by sporadic rocket attacks from Gaza by Islamic militant groups and air strikes by the Israeli forces. Hamas refuses to accept the existence of the Jewish state.

Israel admits tonnes of food aid, consumer goods and fuel into Gaza, but tightly restricts movements of people and anything that might be used for military purposes. However, Qatar's envoy last week indicated that Israel had agreed to permit the import of huge quantities of cement, steel and building machinery that will be need to build new roads and housing.

Gaza was badly damaged in a three-week onslaught by Israel in 2008-2009 to stop rockets being fired at southern Israeli communities. Over 1,300 Palestinians and 13 Israelis were killed in the brief conflict.

The Palestinian Wafa news agency said Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, whose pro-Western Fatah movement was forcibly ejected from Gaza by Hamas in 2007, was told of the Qatari visit in a phone call from the emir in Doha.

Sheik al-Thani "told him of his desire to visit Gaza Strip to inaugurate some projects to reconstruct the strip", Wafa said in a report from the West Bank, where Abbas holds limited power, under Israeli occupation.

"The president welcomed the effort by Qatar to support Gaza Strip, stressing on the unity of Palestinian land and ending division," the agency added. It said Abbas urged Hamas to implement signed agreements for the reconciliation of the two rival movements.

But Gaza and West Bank analysts say reconciliation is not on the cards. Hamas is shifting its ties away from Shi'ite Muslim Iran and wooing Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood, its true spiritual mentor, which now runs the country.

The Palestinian Islamist movement feels the wind in its sails and will use this major injection of Qatari aid and the visit of the emir to demonstrate that it has powerful friends, despite its isolation by the West, say analysts.

Abbas and Fatah, by contrast, have reached a dead end in efforts to revive peace talks with Israel that were suspended two years ago, and have been weakened politically.

The emir is due to fly to Egypt's eastern al-Arish airport and drive into Gaza. Details of his schedule and itinerary were not released.

Biden Says Crying Baby Knows What Romney Win Would Bring

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla.-What happens when a baby starts crying when Vice President Joe Biden is speaking at an event? Well the vice president finds a way to work that baby into his speech as he did in here Saturday afternoon, saying the crying baby knows how its future would pan out if Mitt Romney becomes president.

"They eliminate help for middle-class families who want to send their kids to college like that beautiful baby over there," Biden said as a baby cried at Ketterlinus Gymnasium Saturday. "I don't blame her for crying! I don't blame that baby for crying! That baby, that baby, that baby knows what's in store for him or her if Romney wins! I'm glad someone understands my speech!"

At the last stop of his two day tour through Florida, Biden highlighted the differences between President Obama and Romney, who he accused of deviating from the principles of the Republican Party and constructing a "morphed party."

"He's out of touch where I think this country is, where we move, and now, and now they're even abandoning the core organizing principle of this new Republican Party," he said. "This is not the Republican Party of ten years ago. This is not the Republican Party of 20 years ago. This is not even Mitt Romney's father's Republican Party. This is an alliance between the right in the Republican Party and the Tea Party-people I saw coming in here. I saw four or five of them."

As Biden's motorcade drove to Saturday's event, a few protesters dressed in colonial garb waved signs, including one that said "Bye-Bye Joe Biden Good Bye!"

The vice president touted the president's and his own performances in previous debates, even noting that his grandfather would be "happy" that "all of America knows what the word 'malarkey' means now," and ahead of the final presidential debate in Boca Raton, Fla., Monday, Biden stressed that President Obama has a strong character and will stand by his word.

"Folks, the stakes for this country are too high. They are too important. It's time for people standing for public office to stand up and say what they believe . Stand by what they say. Have the character of their convictions and state it," he said. "Presidential elections are about character and the character of your convictions and my guy he never tells you anything he doesn't mean and he doesn't do."

A new White House executive order would direct U.S. spy agencies to share the latest intelligence about cyberthreats with companies operating electric grids, water plants, railroads and other vital industries to help protect them from electronic attacks, according to a copy obtained by The Associated Press.

The seven-page draft order, which is being finalized, takes shape as the Obama administration expresses growing concern that Iran could be the first country to use cyberterrorism against the United States. The military is ready to retaliate if the U.S. is hit by cyberweapons, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said. But the U.S. also is poorly prepared to prevent such an attack, which could damage or knock out critical services that are part of everyday life.

The White House declined to say when the president will sign the order.

The draft order would put the Department of Homeland Security in charge of organizing an information-sharing network that rapidly distributes sanitized summaries of top-secret intelligence reports about known cyberthreats that identify a specific target. With these warnings, known as tear lines, the owners and operators of essential U.S. businesses would be better able to block potential attackers from gaining access to their computer systems.

An organized, broad-based approach for sharing cyberthreat information gathered by the government is widely viewed as essential for any plan to protect U.S. computer networks from foreign nations, terrorist groups and hackers. Existing efforts to exchange information are narrowly focused on specific industries, such as the finance sector, and have had varying degrees of success.

Yet the order has generated stiff opposition from Republicans on Capitol Hill who view it as a unilateral move that bypasses the legislative authority held by Congress.

Administration officials said the order became necessary after Congress failed this summer to pass cybersecurity legislation, leaving critical infrastructure companies vulnerable to a serious and growing threat. Conflicting bills passed separately by the House and Senate included information-sharing provisions. But efforts to get a final measure through both chambers collapsed over the GOP's concerns that the Senate bill would expand the federal government's regulatory power and increase costs for businesses.

The White House has acknowledged that an order from the president, while legally binding, is not enough. Legislation is needed to make other changes to improve the country's digital defenses. An executive order, for example, cannot offer a company protection from liabilities that might result from a cyberattack on its systems.

The addition of the information-sharing provisions is the most significant change to an earlier draft of the order completed in late August. The new draft, which is not dated, retains a section that requires Homeland Security to identify the vital systems that, if hit by cyberattack, could "reasonably result in a debilitating impact" on national and economic security. Other sections establish a program to encourage companies to adopt voluntary security standards and direct federal agencies to determine whether existing cyber security regulations are adequate.

The draft order directs the department to work with the Pentagon, the National Security Agency, the director of national intelligence and the Justice Department to quickly establish the information-sharing mechanism. Selected employees at critical infrastructure companies would receive security clearances allowing them to receive the information, according to the document. Federal agencies would be required to assess whether the order raises any privacy or civil liberties risks.

To foster a two-way exchange of information, the government would ask businesses to tell the government about cyberthreats or cyberattacks. There would be no requirement to do so.

The NSA has been sharing cyberthreat information on a limited basis with companies that conduct business with the Defense Department. These companies work with sensitive data about weapon systems and technologies and are frequently the targets of cyberspying.

But the loss of valuable information has been eclipsed by fears that an enemy with the proper know-how could cause havoc by sending the computers controlling critical infrastructure systems incorrect commands or infecting them with malicious software. Potential nightmare scenarios include high-speed trains being put on collision courses, blackouts that last days or perhaps even weeks or chemical plants that inadvertently release deadly gases.

Panetta underscored the looming dangers during a speech last week in New York by pointing to the Shamoon virus that destroyed thousands of computer systems owned by Persian Gulf oil and gas companies. Shamoon, which spreads quickly through networked computers and ultimately wipes out files by overwriting them, hit the Saudi Arabian state oil company Aramco and Qatari natural gas producer RasGas.

Panetta did not directly connect Iran to the Aramco and RasGas attacks. But U.S. officials believe hackers based in Iran were behind them.

Shamoon replaced files at Aramco with the image of a burning U.S. flag and rendered more than 30,000 computers useless, Panetta said. The attack on RasGas was similar, he said.

A spokeswoman for the National Security Council, Caitlin Hayden, said the administration is consulting with members of Congress and the private sector as the order is being drafted. But she provided no information on when an order would be signed. "Given the gravity of the threats we face in cyberspace, we want to get this right in addition to getting it done swiftly," she said.

Joe Biden: VP Shown Laughing During Breast Cancer Survivor's ...

joe biden grinning florida campaign stop

Joe Biden was captured on camera laughing with the crowd during a breast cancer survivor?s speech at an Obama campaign event in Florida on Friday. The vice president?s alleged preoccupation with getting the crowd to sit down during a resident?s speech created an awkward scene on the stage. While a woman referred to as Barbra, shared her struggles with breast cancer, Biden whispered into Senator Bill Nelson?s ear and then got up and began doing ?squatting? charades to encourage the audience to sit down. The Sun City Center was filled to capacity for Biden?s visit, according to Tampa Bay Online.

After the crowd appeared to understand what Biden wanted them to do, the C-SPAN video shows him giving the audience a big grin, a thumbs up, and then broke into a little laugh. The gaffe prone vice president likely did not intend to be offensive to the woman sharing an emotional personal story, but his actions may spark controversy all the same.

Earlier this week he made the mistake of asking a crowd if they knew anyone who had served in Iran or Iraq, he obviously meant to say Afghanistan. Anyone can misspeak, especially when being rushed around the country to plead for their job, but the squatting charades captured by C-Span make Biden appear to not appreciate the seriousness of the woman?s speech.

After the laughter invoked by the vice president interrupted Barbra twice, the cancer survivor stopped her speech and asked, ?What?s he doing back there??

During another recent Obama campaign stop, the second in command also decided that the crowd needed to sit down while he was at the podium. Seconds after instructing the audience to take a seat, he apologized after realizing the crowd did not have access to chairs. Perhaps Joe is just exercising good manners and does not want women or senior citizens standing through lengthy speeches; but he may want to work on the timing of his ?be seated? requests to avoid behavior viewed by some, as rude.

Attacker of Pakistani schoolgirl was held, freed in 2009: sources

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - The alleged organizer of the Taliban shooting of a Pakistani schoolgirl was captured during a 2009 military offensive against the hardline Islamist group but released after three months, two senior officials told Reuters.

They identified the man who planned the attack on 14-year-old Malala Yousufzai only as Attaullah, and said he was one of the two gunmen who shot her on a school bus this month in the Swat Valley, northwest of Islamabad.

Believed to be in his 30s, Attaullah is on the run and may have fled to neighboring Afghanistan, they said. He organized the attack on the orders of one of the Taliban's most feared commanders, Maulana Fazlullah, officials said.

Critics say Pakistan's low conviction rate of militants, even high-profile ones who carried out major attacks, is one reason why extremism has spread in the South Asian nation.

The attack on Yousufzai, an advocate of education for girls, has drawn widespread condemnation and raised fresh questions about U.S. ally Pakistan's commitment to fighting militancy in the nuclear-armed country.

Doctors treating her in Britain have said Yousufzai, a symbol of resistance to Taliban efforts to deprive girls of education, has every chance of making a "good recovery" after being shot in the head.

The Taliban have said they attacked her because she spoke out against the group and praised U.S. President Barack Obama.

The two officials said Attaullah was detained by security forces after a 2009 Pakistani military campaign pushed the Taliban out of the Swat Valley.

"He spent three months in the custody of security forces but was freed after no evidence (of wrongdoing) was found," one official said.

The second source, a senior security official, said authorities had now gathered enough evidence to arrest Attaullah after raiding his house in the Swat Valley, a former tourist attraction.

If Attaullah is in Afghanistan, finding him could be difficult. Some of the world's most dangerous militants have operated in the unruly, ethnic Pashtun border area for years, a forbidding area hard for security forces to reach.

The officials said Pakistani security forces were trying other ways to bring him to justice.

"His mother and two brothers were taken into custody to force him to surrender," said the second senior official. "Also two other close relatives of Attaullah have been taken into custody because we heard he spent the night in their house after his escape from Swat."

MELTED AWAY

The second official said Attaullah was not a hardcore militant, only a sympathizer when he was arrested in 2009.

The Taliban commander in charge in Swat was Fazlullah, who melted away during the crackdown and eventually moved to Afghanistan with some of his fighters.

From there, he has orchestrated cross-border raids against Pakistani government forces and has again emerged as a major security threat, security sources have said.

The Taliban, fighting to topple the government and impose a radical theocracy, have blown up hundreds of girls schools in recent years in Swat and other areas to further their opposition to the education of women.

Police and security officials say dozens of suspects were arrested after the Taliban gunmen shot Yousufzai, including four employees of her school. Two of them were released.

Public fury over the shooting has increased pressure on the Pakistani military to mount a major offensive against the Taliban, which is close to al Qaeda and a host of other militant groups.

While many Pakistanis were outraged by the attack on Yousufzai, some leaders of religious parties described the assault as an American conspiracy designed to trigger a military offensive against militant groups based in the North Waziristan tribal region, hundreds of miles to the southwest of Swat.

Washington has repeatedly urged Pakistan to mount a full-scale offensive in North Waziristan, home to the most hardcore militant opponents of the United States. The government has argued the military is too stretched fighting the Taliban elsewhere and consolidating gains from previous crackdowns.

Swat has been held up as a model of counter-insurgency efforts. But critics say the government has failed to follow up with large-scale investment needed to create jobs and industries to keep the Taliban from gaining new recruits.

Pakistani fighter planes pounded suspected militant positions near the northwestern city of Peshawar on Thursday, killing 10 people, said a military official.

The strikes took place in an area where militants killed seven policemen this week, beheading a senior officer and his bodyguard after they were shot.

Newsweek ends print edition, goes all-digital

The cover of Newsweek International for the week of August 2, 2000. The venerable magazine, 80 years in publication, will publish its last print edition in the U.S. at the end of the year and go all-digital.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

At the end of the year, there will be an empty space on the newsstand once occupied by Newsweek magazine.

The venerable news weekly, 80 years in publication, announced Thursday that it will publish its final print edition on Dec. 31. Beginning in the new year, it will go all-digital, a sign of the rapid shift in readership to online via tablets, smartphones and desktops.?

In an announcement posted Thursday on The Daily Beast, which merged with Newsweek two years ago, the?news weekly said the online publication will be called Newsweek Global. It?"will be a single, worldwide edition targeted for a highly mobile, opinion-leading audience who want to learn about world events in a sophisticated context" and?will require a paid subscription.??

The joint?statement from editor-in-chief Tina Brown and CEO Baba Shetty said a challenging print advertising environment was the motivation behind the move. Newsweek said?it was seeking to take advantage of the swift growth in the use of tablets, online and e-readers.?

"Tablet-use has grown rapidly among our readers and with it the opportunity to sustain editorial excellence through swift, easy digital distribution...." the statement said.

"This decision is not about the quality of the brand or the journalism?that is as powerful as ever. It is about the challenging economics of print publishing and distribution," the statement added.

The statement said Newsweek?expected?reductions among its editorial and business staff in the U.S. and overseas, but did not give a specific number.

Barry Diller, the head of the company that owns Newsweek, had announced in July that the publication was examining its future as a weekly print magazine.

Newsweek has been able to build a growing online audience, in part due to the popularity of devices such as Apple Inc's iPad and e-readers from Amazon.com Inc and Barnes & Noble Inc.

That growth has led Newsweek to a "tipping point" where it is most effective to distribute the publication exclusively through digital means, Brown and Shetty wrote.

The Daily Beast gets more than 15 million unique visitors a month, up 70 percent from a year ago, with much of that growth generated by Newsweek, they said.

Industrywide, U.S. magazine advertising pages fell 8.8 percent in the first half of 2012, according to Publisher's Information Bureau data. Newsweek fared better; its ad pages rose 7.6 percent during that period.

But Newsweek's U.S. circulation has been in decline for years, falling from a one-time peak of around 3 million to about 1.5 million now.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

Taiwan keeping close tabs on military vessels near Diaoyutais | End ...

ROC Central News Agency

2012/10/17 17:36:33

Taipei, Oct. 17 (CNA) Taiwan is keeping a close eye on military vessels passing through waters near the Diaoyutai Islands in the East China Sea, a defense official said Wednesday, a day after Chinese vessels were seen moving toward the islands.

?We are on top of the situation,? Defense Minister Kao Hua-chu told the local media before attending a hearing at the Legislature?s Foreign Affairs and National Defense Committee.

Seven Chinese military vessels were reportedly spotted moving toward the disputed Diaoyutais on Tuesday, and the development was a focus of the hearing.

Fielding questions from lawmakers, Kao reiterated that the military has been monitoring the waters near the archipelago and that surveillance of the Diaoyutais has been strengthened amid escalating tensions in the region.

The ministry had a clear picture of the movements of the Chinese military vessels over the past few days, Kao said, adding that the fleet sailed no closer than about 40 nautical miles away from the Diaoyutais.

The Chinese fleet was conducting a regular drill as they passed through the Pacific Ocean, and approached as close as 80 nautical miles off the eastern coast of Taiwan, Kao said.

Given the recent developments in the region, the military will remain alert and beef up its combat readiness, Kao added.

Asked about whether his ministry will protest China?s military vessels sailing in waters near Taiwan, Kao said, ?we will lodge a protest if they enter our territory.?

Tension over the Diaoyutais flared up after Japan moved to nationalize and strengthen its sovereignty claim over the island chain by buying three of the islets from their private owner on Sept. 11, spurring protests in Taiwan and China.

Despite the recent tensions between China and Japan, Kao told lawmakers that the current situation was unlikely to develop into a military conflict.

Meanwhile, Kao said the military has been closely monitoring the waters near the archipelago and is coordinating its efforts with the Coast Guard Administration (CGA).

He pledged that the ministry will work with the CGA to safeguard the rights of Taiwanese fishermen to operate in waters near the Diaoyutais.

The uninhabited Diaoyutai Islands, known as the Senkakus in Japan and the Diaoyu Islands in China, lie about 100 nautical miles northeast of Taiwan. They have been under Japan?s control since 1972, but are also claimed by Taiwan and China.

One Perfect Bite: Rigatoni with Creamy Tomato Sauce

From the kitchen of One Perfect Bite...This simple pasta has the makings of a great family meal that will appeal to young and old alike. The dish has three basic elements; pasta, a rich tomato sauce and cheese. The sauce can be quickly made from canned or fresh tomatoes and the cheese can be served on the side or folded into the marinara if you want a creamy sauce. This is a perfect dish to serve on a busy school night. It can be made in stages. The tomato sauce, which freezes well, can be made days before its needed and rewarmed when you are ready to use it. For reasons that still elude me, cooks back in the 50's and 60's thought marinara sauce had to simmer for hours before it could be served. Imagine the looks on their faces if they were to learn that these days we make it in 20 minutes. Would they call that progress? I love the appearance of this dish. It has a spare elegance that I find appealing. The dish also makes me smile. When my children were quite young they called spaghetti worms and rigatoni whistles. I wonder if the food mainstream is ready for a dish called Whistles in Red Sauce. This basic tomato sauce is the one that introduced most of us to Italian cooking and I think we still love its simplicity. I hope those of you who make this recipe, which was found in a special issue of Gourmet, will enjoy your own walk down memory lane. Here's their recipe for Rigatoni with Creamy Tomato Sauce.

Rigatoni with Creamy Tomato Sauce
...from the kitchen of One Perfect Bite courtesy of the special publication, Gourmet Easy Dinners.

Ingredients:
3 pounds fresh plum tomatoes or 1 (28-oz) can whole tomatoes in juice
2 large garlic cloves, crushed with side of a large heavy knife
Pinch of hot red-pepper flakes
1/4 cup olive oil
1-1/4 tsp salt
4 fresh basil leaves, torn into bits
1 pound rigatoni
1 cup ricotta (about 8-ounces; preferably fresh)
Grated Pecorino Romano

Directions:
1) If using fresh tomatoes, cut a shallow X in bottom of each with a paring knife and blanch tomatoes in 3 batches in a 5- to 6-quart pot of boiling water, 1 minute per batch. Transfer blanched tomatoes with a slotted spoon to a cutting board and, when cool enough to handle, peel, beginning from scored end, with knife, then halve lengthwise and seed. Chop tomatoes (fresh or canned), reserving juice (from cutting board or can).
2) Cook garlic and red-pepper flakes in oil in a 4-quart heavy pot over moderate heat, stirring, until garlic is golden, about 5 minutes. Discard garlic, then add tomatoes with their juice and salt and simmer, uncovered, until sauce is thickened, about 20 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in basil and salt to taste.
3) Cook pasta in a 6- to 8-quart pot of well salted boiling water, uncovered, until al dente, then drain in a colander.
4) Toss pasta with warm marinara sauce in a large bowl. Serve with ricotta and grated Pecorino Romano. Yield: 4 servings.

Cooks? Notes: Sauce can be made ahead and cooled completely, uncovered, then chilled, covered, up to 5 days or frozen in an airtight container for 2 months.

If using canned tomatoes, whose sodium content varies, use only 1/4 teaspoon salt then season your finished sauce with additional salt if desired.

Gold nanoparticle cancer treatment in dogs has no observed side ...

We have witnessed the devastating side effects of current cancer therapies for far too many years -- we might be able to shrink or destroy cancerous masses or cells, but the effects of blasting an individual with localised radiation or injecting toxic chemicals into their bloodstream are, in themselves, deadly. We're due to wait until till as long as 2030 to see graphene become a drug delivery tool that targets only cancerous cells, but now, a collaborative team at the University of Missouri has proven that radioactive gold nanoparticles are an effective and side effect-free cancer treatment -- at least, that is, in dogs with aggressive prostate cancer.

"Dogs represent such a good model because they develop the disease naturally," explains Sandra Axiak-Bechtel, an assistant professor of oncology at the University of Missouri (MU) College of Veterinary Medicine. "It's a disease that normally we don't have a particularly good treatment for so it offers us as veterinarians the opportunity to better and more aggressively treat the disease while preserving their quality of life, and in the future hopefully it will give us a better way of treating men with prostate cancer more aggressively as well."

Previous research by Stanford University had revealed the potential for gold nanoparticles to "tag" cancerous cells. The nanoparticles were coated in imaging reagents before being introduced to brain tumour patients. "We hypothesised that these particles, injected intravenously, would preferentially home in on tumours but not healthy brain tissue," said lead radiologist on the case Sam Gambhir. This, he added, is down to the fact that, "the tiny blood vessels that feed a brain tumour are leaky, so we hoped that the spheres would bleed out of these vessels and lodge in nearby tumour material." They did just that. Using MRI, photoacoustic and Raman imaging, the coated particles could be picked out and act as a map of the brain tumours. All that was left to do was activate the gold nanoparticles so that they could go from passive mapping tools to weapons.

And this is exactly what the MU team has done.

The treatment involves introducing radioactive gold nanoparticles directly to a prostate tumour, causing it to shrink. Axiak-Bechtel explains: "We deliver the gold nanoparticles using CT guided injection; they are radioactive; and the gum arabic coating keeps the nanoparticles from aggregating (normally, with no coating, the nanoparticles clump together; with gum Arabic, they can freely diffuse through the tumour without any clumping). Because the nanoparticles are so small, the injection appears as a purple liquid, and because dog prostate tumors are so large, we inject in multiple different sites."

Thus far, it has produced no side effects in the dogs taking part and has also been successful in shrinking tumours in mice. The doses required are thousands of times smaller than those used in chemotherapy, and it can also be introduced directly to the tumour, rather than passing into disease-free tissue and organs. The side effects are monitored by taking blood tests looking for "systemic toxicity" and using CT scans to look for "local toxicity" (swelling, infection) some four weeks after treatment. "We have found no statistically significant differences in bloodwork parameters for bone marrow, kidneys, and liver. In dogs that had a CT scan four weeks after treatment, there was no evidence of tumour swelling or infection," Axiak-Bechtel told Wired.co.uk.

The results are a huge step forward in the advancement of nanotechnology in healing and curing cancer. Until now, therapy using gold nanoparticles to attack cancer cells has been purely lab-based. For instance, pancreatic cancer cells have already been destroyed using gold nanoparticles shattered by radiowaves, and breast cancer cells were destroyed in experiments using a targeted 42C laser. How safe these procedures would be in human subjects still remains to be seen, but the side effect-free dogs -- the only other mammal to naturally develop prostate cancer -- sets an exciting precedent.

According to Cancer Research UK, prostate cancer is the fourth most common form of the disease in this country, with 40,841 new cases in 2009. If it is not picked up at its early stages, it becomes very aggressive and spreads rapidly. At that point, high doses of chemotherapy are the main course of treatment but are largely ineffectual in delivering a cure. It's another reason why dogs were the ideal candidates for the study. Not only is it naturally occurring in them, suggesting the results would also be mirrored in humans, says Axiak-Bechtel, but it usually goes undiagnosed for too long: "Because dogs can't tell us how they feel, many times they are diagnosed with the disease too late, but this treatment gives us some hope that we can still combat aggressive tumours".

Taliban says its attack on Pakistani schoolgirl justified

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Taliban insurgents said on Tuesday that the Pakistani schoolgirl its gunmen shot in the head deserved to die because she had spoken out against the group and praised U.S. President Barack Obama.

Malala Yousufzai, 14, was flown to Britain on Monday, where doctors said she has every chance of making a "good recovery".

The attack on Yousufzai, who had been advocating education for girls, drew widespread condemnation.

Pakistani surgeons removed a bullet from near her spinal cord during a three-hour operation the day after the attack last week, but she now needs intensive specialist follow-up care.

Authorities have said they have made several arrests in connection with the case but have given no details.

Pakistan's Taliban described Yousufzai as a "spy of the West".

"For this espionage, infidels gave her awards and rewards. And Islam orders killing of those who are spying for enemies," the group said in a statement.

"She used to propagate against mujahideen (holy warriors) to defame (the) Taliban. The Quran says that people propagating against Islam and Islamic forces would be killed.

"We targeted her because she would speak against the Taliban while sitting with shameless strangers and idealized the biggest enemy of Islam, Barack Obama."

Yousufzai, a cheerful schoolgirl who had wanted to become a doctor before agreeing to her father's wishes that she strive to be a politician, has become a potent symbol of resistance against the Taliban's efforts to deprive girls of an education.

Pakistanis have held some protests and candlelight vigils but most government officials have refrained from publicly criticizing the Taliban by name over the attack, in what critics say is a lack of resolve against extremism.

"We did not attack her for raising voice for education. We targeted her for opposing mujahideen and their war," said the Taliban. "Shariah (Islamic law) says that even a child can be killed if he is propagating against Islam."

Pandas were eaten by prehistoric Chinese people, scientist says

Was the adorable giant panda once a staple of the Chinese diet? (ABC News)Recently discovered fossil records suggest that ancient human living in China may have regularly eaten giant pandas as part of their diet.

The Institute of Three Gorges Paleoanthropology lead scientist Wei Guangbiao says the fossils, discovered in the modern-day city of Chongqing, contain tool markings. "We have studied many samples of panda fossils excavated in Chongqing from the sites where humans once lived," Wei told the Associated Press. A large number of them showed that pandas were slashed to death by man."

However, prehistoric giant pandas were both smaller and much more abundant than their endangered, modern day counterparts.

"In primitive times, people wouldn't kill animals that were useless to them," Wei said in another interview with the Chongqing Morning Post. He says the pandas lived in the Chongqing Mountains between 10,000 and 1 million years ago.

An article in Slate explains that panda meat is said to taste "terrible," in part due to the panda's diet largely consisting of bamboo. There is reportedly no detailed history of humans eating pandas and anyone in China found guilty of killing an endangered panda can face up to seven years in prison

One observer said the prehistoric giant pandas were likely far more palatable than today's pandas, which are said to have "stringy" meat.

Sad Panda, indeed.

Scott Lewis - Chief Marketing Officer for Fantasy Politics

Scott Lewis - EVP and Chief Marketing Officer for Fantasy Politics

?One thing I think is super-important is to know your buyers: build what they need, not what you can build.

Scott Lewis is Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer for Fantasy Politics, LLC, in Boston, Massachusetts. He is responsible for all aspects of marketing at Fantasy Politics, including product marketing, public relations, advertising, inbound marketing and media production. According to Lewis, ?In a startup, everyone wears many hats, and we?re no exception. A day for me could include collaborating with a strategic partner, market testing a new concept and building a web page, online ad or email template.? He adds that he ?loves the mix of strategic thinking, operational execution and hands-on tech? that comes from being in a fast-paced entrepreneurial role.

Prior to Fantasy Politics, Lewis was President of Lewis Studios, a photo and video storytelling marketing services company that helped small businesses gain a presence in the second largest search engine on the internet (YouTube) and with video marketing in general. ?Telling the client?s story through motion and sound adds a much more personal touch, while retaining the economics of mass-marketing for both pre- and post-sale needs,? Lewis says.

Prior to Lewis Studios, Scott spent 18 years with Novell, most recently as Global Vice President of Marketing with the responsibility for partner marketing, partner programs and sales enablement for Novell?s own sales force and their partners.

Lewis earned a degree in Electronics Engineering Technologies around the same time as the personal computer and local area networks began their exponential growth period. ?I found I was quite skilled at selling, configuring, programming and training people to use these new technologies,? he says. ?I jumped on the wave and experienced tremendous success, first as an entrepreneur at a regional value-added reseller, then as a customer and finally as the number one vendor of networking software.? Lewis credits his success to his multidimensional experience as partner, customer and vendor. ?My interactions with co-workers, partners, suppliers and customers are informed by having spent time in each of their shoes.?

A lifelong learner, Lewis has never stopped educating himself. In addition to being an avid reader, he has taken formal and informal courses across a range of fields, including technology, management, quality, leadership, sales, product management and marketing, throughout his career.

What are you working on right now?

Fantasy Politics is our startup and is a MassChallenge finalist. We?re like fantasy sports applied to political figures. Scoring is based on momentum from 15 different factors instead of yards, receptions, touchdowns and so forth. The factors measure social media engagement and velocity, fundraising, polling results, Intrade futures value and more.

We offer our data for free as it is useful and interesting to political junkies, campaigns, students and the media. We also operate two games. One is free and league-based where you compete with your friends for bragging rights. The other is fee-based and is a nationwide competition where the best political minds are rewarded with cash and prizes.

Where did the idea for Fantasy Politics come from?

We realized that there are a lot of people who are more interested in politics than sports who still want a way to be entertained, to compete with other people passionate about the subject and to learn more about how power and influence work in politics.

We see two markets for the game, a public market where political junkies and armchair politicians can prove themselves in competition and a slightly different market where teachers can use an adapted version of the game to get students more interested and engaged in political science or civics classes. Over time, we expect the data we?re collecting and the methods we use to create scores that will also be marketable assets.

What does your typical day look like?

We just launched our National Championship, so my days are full of promotion and social networking to acquire a core set of users who can enjoy the game and help us with word of mouth as they invite their friends and colleagues to compete with them. IdeaMensch readers should check out the game at fantasypolitics.co !

How do you bring ideas to life?

We have a small but talented and committed team. We run like a lean startup. We try ideas and drop what doesn?t work while building on what does. We test not just the technical functionality, but the messaging, the advertising and the website content. We?re spread out as a team literally around the world, so we collaborate by phone and by email and by shared online Google Docs for brainstorming, planning and checking in with each other. We are increasing our market testing of ideas. Sometimes it is good to build things and see if they have appeal, but sometimes it is better to test the idea before the effort of building it out.

What?s one trend that really excites you?

Video marketing. I started a photo and video storytelling business for marketing services before joining Fantasy Politics. The explosion of YouTube and other video marketing is important. YouTube is now one of the top search engines and is the first place a lot of people go to listen to music. Yes, I said ?listen.? It turns out the video may or may not matter, but people find a lot of music to listen to on YouTube.

More related to our business, though, YouTube and video marketing give us the means to show the user what they?ll experience in our game and tell them about our rich data without them having to invest in creating an account and learning to navigate and use our site. If they like what they see, they can then decide to make those investments of time in understanding our offerings. And if they do get involved with our site and our game and get stuck on something, we can offer videos that show them how things work. It takes a little time to put these videos together, but they can prevent a lot of support calls and add a personal touch that FAQs and how-to pages don?t really convey. Every interaction becomes a chance to tell a story and enchant the customer.

What was the worst job you ever had, and what did you learn from it?

In my teens ,I worked on a tobacco farm for a few summers. My job was to remove the suckers that grow between the trunk and the main branches. It was dirty, hot, disgusting work. I learned that I wanted to do something cleaner and more fun for a living. For some reason, I later spent some time servicing photocopiers. Believe or not, for an electro-mechanical minded person like me, this did satisfy the fun criteria but not the clean criteria, and it wasn?t going to make me a lot of money.

If you were to start again, what would you do differently?

I would?ve skipped my third worse job, which was as an IT executive in a mutual life insurance company. I loved my team and made many friends there, but big financial institutions move very slowly and I am too much of a change agent to survive in that environment. I would start up a company instead. It is immensely more consuming of you. Hours are long. Success is sweet, but failure is invaluable in its own way. Creating something from nothing and meeting unmet needs in the market are highly rewarding.

As an entrepreneur, what is the one thing you do over and over and recommend everyone else do?

Work the plan but don?t be trapped by it. Do the little things that have to be done. That?s why you put them in the plan. But if you find the plan isn?t working, test, decide and alter course! The alternative is to bounce around with no direction, and it may be useful in the brainstorming stage, but it isn?t a great way to actually get something to market.

What is one failure you had as an entrepreneur, and how did you overcome it?

In my second startup, we had done well for about five years but plateaued. I just could not agree with the co-founder on which way to go to get it growing again. I was young, had my whole life in front of me and chose to leave. Unfortunately, I went to that mutual insurance company IT executive role, which was a two-year detour where I learned I liked being the seller more than being the buyer.

What is one business idea that you?re willing to give away to our readers?

I have a really hard time limiting this to one idea, really. One thing I think is super-important is to know your buyers: build what they need, not what you can build. Talk to real, non-customer buyers to understand their needs. Don?t ask them what to build. If you?re trying to change the world, they won?t know what needs to be built. But they will know what needs to be accomplished, what is costing too much, what is just too painful or where too many mistakes happen too often.

If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be and how would you go about it?

I?d wind the clock back at least a hundred years and put a focus on limited natural resources and the environment in the minds of entrepreneurs who didn?t know how big these problems would become. We?d be a lot further along if we?d been working on these since before they became urgent.

Tell us a secret.

I have a small tractor with a backhoe and front-end loader. When I?m not busy doing digital marketing and bringing technical products to market, I get dirty out in the yard with our many vegetable and flower gardens. It turns out I didn?t dislike getting dirty as much as I thought back in those tobacco fields; I just really didn?t like that particular crop.

What are your three favorite online tools or resources, and what do you love about them?

For the political junkies out there, I of course have to say that fantasypolitics.co is a top online resource.

Although I?m becoming more of a political junkie myself, prior to joining Fantasy Politics, you would probably have found Amazon.com more often in my search history.

Google continues to get the job done for me. I am pretty proud of my ability to form the best search query when I need to learn something but I am more impressed by Google?s ability to help me find what I need and the Internet?s ability to provide so much information.

Social media in general is pretty valuable to me. I will cheat a little here and lump them all in as one of my three resources, but LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter and Google Plus are all important to my work and my hobbies.

What is the one book that you recommend our community should read and why?

I cannot possibly restrict this answer to one book. I am an avid reader, and my life and work have been shaped by so many great books. If I have to pick one, I?ll honor the recent passing of Stephen Covey and say Principle Centered Leadership because we all need to apply the 7 Habits to how we lead and work together if we?re going to grow amazing, lasting companies.

But really, read everything he wrote, everything Guy Kawasaki has written, all of Seth Godin?s stuff, David Meerman Scott?s stuff, Hubspot?s various whitepapers and presentations on inbound marketing and, for the election season, try Hard Facts, Dangerous Half-Truths And Total Nonsense: Profiting from Evidence-Based Management by Jeffrey Pfeffer and Robert Sutton. It?ll change how you view the campaigns? messages and the media, but it will also help you run a company on data, not opinion.

Three people we should follow on Twitter and why?

1.? @fantasypols for the latest and greatest political info, and because this one handle gets you a whole team of bloggers and masters of data.
2.? @mariashriver because she?ll keep you reminded of what the rest of life is about.
3.? @MassChallenge because no one can introduce you to more or better startups.

When was the last time you laughed out loud? What caused it?

Last night, watching the Democratic National Convention and seeing Slick Willy can still sell. I laughed because he gives speeches so well that he could easily convince a lot of people that the sky is green. He?d just said something I knew to be very untrue, and the crowd ate it up. Sad, but it made me laugh as I appreciate great sales skills even though I don?t condone misleading your buyer.

Who is your hero?

My mom. My dad died young, and she managed to raise two boys who turned out to be productive members of society and a daughter some years later who is a business guru in her own right. We never knew we were ?have nots,? and we never knew we couldn?t become successes. It turns out that when you think you can, you usually can.

What drives you professionally?

People. In large companies, my teams and coworkers fuel me. In small startups, the same is true, but there are a lot less of them. Customers and non-customers inspire, inform and ground me in reality all at once. Partners can make or break my day, but if we partnered for the right reasons and share the right goals, we?re a lot stronger together than separate. Choose your partners wisely and make the partnership about something other than publicity, and you?ll do well.

What do you do when you?re not working?

When is that? I do work a lot, but I love to travel and meet people in other parts of the country and the world. I take a lot of photos on trips. Despite my video marketing experience, I seem to like to tell the story of a trip through photos. I often set them in motion and add music in video presentations, but the images are, at core, still captures of special moments.
