WWE Main Event results: Ryback's hunger tested

BRIDGEPORT, Conn.,?? With only days remaining until WWE TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs, Ryback set out to destroy experienced two-time WWE Champion Alberto Del Rio and send a message to The Shield. Also, 3MB battled the high-octane duo of Justin Gabriel & Tyson Kidd in an impromptu 3-on-2 Handicap Match.

Ryback def. Alberto Del Rio (PHOTOS | WATCH)

Before the contest got underway, Ricardo Rodriguez made his way to the ring and rather than give his patented ring introduction for Alberto Del Rio, he offered a video tribute for his favorite WWE Superstar (WATCH). As the celebratory video of The Mexican Aristocrat began running down a laundry list of his superior qualities, however, it was interrupted by three simple words that have taken WWE by storm: ?Feed Me More!?

Ryback had enough of the Del Rio?praise and made his way to the ring. Of course, this only upset the Mexican Superstar, who entered Bridgeport, Conn.?s Webster Bank Arena ready to teach his opponent a lesson in respect. Most of the time, WWE Superstars display some trepidation before entering the squared circle with Ryback, but Del Rio was so disgusted with the audacity of his opponent that his arrogance and overconfidence outweighed any fears he might have of Ryback?s sheer power.

When the opening bell sounded, Ryback faced a true test in his young and dominant career. Del Rio ? a legend in Mexico ? is a wise and shrewd tactician; a full-on show of strength would be a fool?s folly against a Superstar of Del Rio?s caliber. Nonetheless, Ryback?s powerful abilities certainly played in his favor.

The battle between the crafty veteran and powerful rookie was certainly a textbook example of agility vs. power. Del Rio?s offense was aggressive, knowing full well he had to keep his monstrous adversary on the defensive as often as possible. But as The Mexican Aristocrat discovered early in the bout, Ryback?s entire arsenal is based purely on strength.

Displaying both his cunning and experience, Del Rio managed to pin Ryback?s arm between the steel steps and the ring post. With his opponent trapped, the two-time WWE Champion kicked the steps, hoping to soften up Ryback for a Cross Armbreaker. Throughout the contest, The Mexican Aristocrat focused on Ryback?s arm, using his agility and lucha libre abilities to counter many of Ryback?s maneuvers and to keep the pressure on his opponent?s limb.

Though if there is one thing the WWE Universe has learned about Ryback over the course of 2012, it?s that not only is his power impressive, but also his resilience is equally as extraordinary. The hungry Superstar continued to fight and overpowered his opponent as Del Rio set up for his patented Cross Armbreaker.

Being slammed into the turnbuckle left The Mexican Superstar reeling, and with the WWE Universe chanting, Ryback hit the Meathook clothesline before executing Shell Shocked on Del Rio to pick up arguably his most impressive victory to date.

Following the match, Matt Striker asked Ryback about teaming with Team Hell No in their battle against The Shield at WWE TLC. When asked if he could coexist with Daniel Bryan and Kane, Ryback responded, ?Yes! Yes! Yes!? (WATCH)

What causes hot flushes during menopause?

Wednesday, December 12, 2012

Hot flushes affect millions of people, and not just women. Yet, it is still unclear what causes the episodes of temperature discomfort, often accompanied by profuse sweating.

Now a team of researchers around Dr. Naomi Rance, a professor in the department of pathology at the UA College of Medicine, has come closer to understanding the mechanism of hot flushes, a necessary step for potential treatment options down the road. This research was published recently in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The team identified a group of brain cells known as KNDy neurons as a likely control switch of hot flushes. KNDy neurons (pronounced "candy") are located in the hypothalamus, a portion of the brain controlling vital functions that also serves as the switchboard between the central nervous system and hormone signals.

"Although the KNDy neurons are a very small population of cells, our research reveals that they play extremely important roles in how the body controls its energy resources, reproduction and temperature," said Melinda Mittelman-Smith, who led the study as part of her doctoral thesis. "They are true multitaskers."

By studying KNDy neurons in rats, the research team created an animal model of menopause to elucidate the biological mechanisms of temperature control in response to withdrawal of the hormone estrogen, the main trigger of the changes that go along with menopause.

They discovered that tail skin temperature was consistently lower in rats whose KNDy neurons were inactivated, suggesting the neurons control a process known as vasodilation, or widening of the blood vessels to increase blood flow through the skin.

"The hallmark of hot flushes is vasodilation," explained Rance, who also is a neuropathologist at The University of Arizona Medical Center. "When you flush, your skin gets hot and you can see the redness of the skin. It is an attempt of the body to get rid of heat, just like sweating. Except that if you were to measure core temperature at that point, you would find it is not even elevated."

Although the results are not yet directly applicable in helping individuals affected by hot flushes, they mark a necessary first step, Rance said.

"Obviously we can't do these studies in women, and only if we understand the mechanism is there a chance of developing therapies. All that is known so far is that dwindling estrogen levels have something to do with it but anything after that is a black box."

"Right now the only effective way of treating flushes is estrogen-replacement therapy. If we could figure out what is causing those flushes, we could try to develop a better, more targeted therapy."

Rance said hot flushes usually last for four or five years and occur in up to 80 percent of women but also in men undergoing certain hormone treatments for prostate cancer.

"For some people it's not too bad, but it can be very severe in other individuals; they loose sleep et cetera. So the question I have been asking myself is, 'How come we haven't figured this out?'"

Together with her coworkers, Rance has studied KNDy neurons and their functions for two decades.

"KNDy neurons respond to circulating estrogens," Mittelman-Smith explained. "When these hormones are at very low levels, as is the case in menopause, these neurons go haywire if you will. They grow very large and manufacture several times more neurotransmitter than they did with estrogens present."

"Because the neurons talk to known thermoregulatory centers of the brain, we think this increased signaling activity may inappropriately tell the body, 'I'm hot, release heat.' This triggers heat loss mechanisms like sweating and opening up of blood vessels in the skin."

Analogous to women going through menopause, the tail skin temperature goes up in rats after removal of the ovaries, where estrogen is produced.

"Rats regulate heat dissipation with their tail because the rest is covered by fur," Rance explained. "In rats without ovaries, the lack of estrogen causes vasodilation, which we can measure as increased tail skin temperature."

"Once we knew that estrogen really does control tail skin temperature in a rat, we wanted to know what role, if any, the KNDy neurons play in this."

When Rance and her team compared the tail skin temperatures of rats with intact KNDy neurons to those with inactivated KNDy neurons, they discovered that while tail skin temperatures still followed the same ups and downs over the course of the day and night cycle, they were lower in the absence of KNDy activity.

"They have lower levels of vasodilation," Rance said. "It is very consistent. Their tail skin temperature is lower than rats with normal KNDy neurons and stays low. It doesn't matter if they have estrogen or not; it doesn't matter if it's night or if it's day."

"The rats didn't seem unhappy at all," she added. "You'd think they'd be curling up and shivering, but no. There was no difference in the core temperature, so they weren't internally cold. We did all the activity measurements and found them to be completely normal. We couldn't tell a difference other than lower vasodilatation."

Rance said she is not surprised that the same neuronal switches that are important for reproduction also control thermoregulation.

"Being able to regulate body temperature is very important for the species and also for reproduction because it is important for a pregnant woman to avoid extreme hyperthermia. Hot flushes are a symptom of hyperactivity of these neurons."

The researchers caution that while KNDy neurons are critical for normal thermoregulation, they are by no means the sole center for managing body temperature.

"These animals would be in much more trouble if that were the case," Mittelman-Smith said. "In fact, I don't view KNDy neurons as a thermoregulatory center at all, but rather a group of cells that has the ability to influence thermoregulatory centers."

Rance added: "I wouldn't say we solved the problem, but we have a good clue about what could be causing the flushes."

Self Improvement Times: Time Management Strategies - Overcome ...

Time management strategies must address your personal challenges to be truly effective. Countering your Time Gremlins wins you still more time. Isn't it a delicious feeling to break free of them?

They are, of course, a part of you, and can only be opposed when you take the time to get to know them. They grow out of your history, your values conflicts and unfinished business. Yet they can most certainly be overcome. I think it's great news that your Time Gremlins are completely dependent upon you in order to survive. They can only thrive by using your energy. And they do so by hitchhiking rides on your plans, trying to scoot under your radar.

Granted, these Time Gremlins are clever... But believe me, you can be smarter! It's best to take them on one at a time, so I'll start with one of the most widespread ones.

The People Pleaser Gremlin

The People Pleaser Gremlin wheedles you into empowering others. So it's most helpful to understand your motivation in undermining yourself this way.

* Do you doubt your ability to proceed independently?

* Do you try to win people's favor in the hope of receiving some reward?

These are common concerns. Yet when you value others' priorities over your own, you forfeit your ability to plan effectively.

Apply The Antidote for the People Pleaser Gremlin.

To apply the antidote to the People Pleaser Gremlin, ask yourself these questions. Then jot down each answer in a sentence or two:

1. What is the worst thing that can realistically happen if you meet this challenge?

2. When you put yourself first, what new challenges will you face?

3. In what way will meeting these new challenges help you grow?

4. How will you become more clearly defined?

5. What is your very first step that you can perform in a single sitting?

Take that all-important first step as soon as you possibly can! Remember that courage grows with action. And Time Gremlins lose their power as soon as you stop believing in their distorted messages.

You will receive a number of additional benefits when you develop more self-reference:

Your ability to prioritize will increase, because you'll be paying more attention to yourself and less attention to others. Your ability to follow through on your priorities will improve, too, because you won't be re-routed by others' demands. Interestingly, you will find people respect you more and trust you more, because they will sense your growing authenticity. Furthermore, you won't be as likely to overbook yourself and then fail to follow through.

One of the most profound discoveries about taking back your power from your Time Gremlins is that you not only have more time - you also have more of yourself.

So what is your next step to truly take your power over your time into your own hands?

CompTIA's Continuing Education Program Explained

In early 2011, we briefly covered the Continuous Education program from CompTIA, which provides ways you can keep your time-limited certifications up to date with relevant industry information. Because you have a few years to renew the certificates, now is the perfect time to take a look at its requirements and examine what it offers.

Before you make the plunge, it is worth noting whether you really should or can take advantage of this program or not. According to CompTIA?s website, it really depends on when you completed previous IT certificates in the CompTIA lineup:

If you earned one or more of the following certifications, CompTIA A+,?CompTIA Network+ or CompTIA Security+, on or before Dec. 31, 2010, those certifications will never expire, and you will always be considered ?certified for life? for those certifications, regardless of if you participate in the CE program.

If you earned a CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+ or CompTIA Security+ certification after January 1, 2011, you are automatically enrolled in the Continuous Education Program, and your certification has an expiration date of three years from the date certified.

This means that you will have three years to complete the Continuous Education Program from the date you got certified in any of these specialties. Alternatively, you can retake the most recent version of the certification exam to stay up to date on your certifications. You also have a period of three years from enrollment in the CE program to meet all its requirements. These include completing an appropriate level of continuing education units and receiving a new CE designation (which will appear on your certificate).

Besides supporting CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+, and CompTIA Security+, CompTIA also mentions CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner (CASP) on another section of the website as being supported by the program. It may be worth looking into if you deal with security and have that certificate on your resume, although it doesn?t seem to support the certified for life option for those of you who earned a certification in it before Dec. 31, 2010. You will most likely need to take part in the program to keep this particular certificate up to date.

On the CompTIA FAQ, CompTIA Storage+ is mentioned as another option that may be supported by the time you read this, because it comes with a ?ce? notation as part of its certification process, along with the four other certificates. Here is how the FAQ describes the ?ce? notation and the different noted certificates:

To comply with the new certification renewal policy beginning January 1, 2011, CompTIA launched American National Standards Institute (ANSI) accredited versions of the CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+, CompTIA Security+, CompTIA Storage+ and CASP certification programs. The new program certifications will have a notation on the certificates: CompTIA A+ce, CompTIA Network+ce, CompTIA Security+ce, CompTIA Storage+ce and CompTIA CASPce. The name change will denote the new continuing education requirement associated with these programs.

It is also worth noting that your employer may still ask you to take part in the Continuing Education program despite being certified for life. This is because IT changes on a constant basis and technology advances at a rapid pace. Your employer may want you to stay up to date on these changes and enroll.

The CE program includes an activity chart that lets you participate on your own or at your work place and earn education units (CEUs). Once you?ve reviewed the submission guidelines, you can submit the information from the activity in the chart. The activities you choose should be relevant to the level of certification you are renewing and meet the requirements to be considered. Keep in mind it can be audited.

Activities must show your understanding of relevant industry knowledge. Some examples mentioned on CompTIA?s website include ?teaching on relevant industry topics, attending industry conferences and events, joining in a CompTIA exam development workshop, and publishing articles or?white papers on industry topics.?

The price will set you back $75 for CompTIA A+ and $147 for the other certification program renewals in terms of the total CE fee. Annual CE fees vary from $25 to $49. You can see the cost breakdowns for all the different options on CompTIA?s website. The amount of CEU units required is also shown in the chart.

For those of you not in the United States, you can still take part in the program as it is global, according to the CompTIA FAQ. The different certificates available for this program are accredited under ANSI/ISO/IEC 17024. ISO stands for the International Organization for Standardization and works globally on various IT certificates.

If you are certified for life and still want to participate in the program, head on over to certmetrics.com/comptia/login.aspx, click on the ?Continuing Education? link, and finally on ?Enroll.? Otherwise, you are automatically enrolled and have three years to complete the requirements.

Mobile app boosts weight loss by 15 pounds

Dec. 10, 2012 ? Using a mobile app that tracks eating and activity helped people lose an average of 15 pounds and keep it off for at least a year, according to a new Northwestern Medicine study.

But the technology only aided weight loss when its users also attended regular classes about nutrition and exercise. The app alone didn't help.

"The app is important because it helps people regulate their behavior, which is really hard to do," said Bonnie Spring, lead investigator of the study and a professor of preventive medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. "Most of us have no idea how many calories we consume and how much physical activity we get. The app gives you feedback on this and helps you make smart decisions in the moment."

"The 'widget' is critical but it is not magical by itself," Spring added. "People need all the tools at their disposal."

The study will be published Dec. 10 in Archives of Internal Medicine.

This is the first study to show that technology added to an existing program of weight loss classes can produce sustained weight loss. Spring believes the weight loss app is the first proven to be effective in a published randomized clinical trial. Commercially available apps are not usually evidence based or tested for effectiveness in rigorously designed research, she noted.

In addition, the Northwestern technology is based on validated behavior change techniques including self-monitoring, goal setting, feedback and social support.

The study included 69 overweight and obese adults who were an average age of 58 and primarily men. All participants were offered health education classes on nutrition, exercise and behavior change twice monthly during the first six months and once monthly for the remainder of the year.

Each participant received weekly calorie goals based on his current weight and weekly activity goals based on his current level of activity. Participants receiving treatment as usual recorded their eating and activity on paper. Those in the experimental treatment used the mobile device to transmit their data to a behavioral coach, who monitored their information and provided scheduled telephone coaching for 10 to 15 minutes about twice monthly.

People who used the mobile phone technology and attended 80 percent of the health education sessions lost 15 pounds and maintained the loss for one year. The average weight loss for the mobile phone group -- including those who did not attend the education sessions -- was 8.6 pounds. The control group -- which received the education sessions but no mobile app -- did not lose weight.

The time people spent interacting with the remote coaches was minimal.

"The coaches' most important role was being in the wings," Spring said. "The patients know the coaches are hovering and supportively holding them accountable. They know somebody is watching and caring and that's what makes a difference."

The participants, who were older, did not have prior experience with mobile phone technology and easily mastered the technology. "Some people think older people won't use technology interventions, but that isn't so," Spring said.

One big challenge in treating obesity is the need to provide intensive behavioral treatment in a health care system where physicians don't have the time and training to do it.

"This approach empowers patients to help themselves on a day-to-day basis," Spring said. "We can help people lose meaningful amounts of weight and keep it off. To do that we need to engage them in tracking their own eating and activity, learn how that governs weight, and take advantage of social support."

Nigeria minister's mother abduction part of trend

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) ? Police searched Monday for the kidnapped mother of Nigeria's powerful finance minister, after an abduction that shows no one is out of reach of criminal gangs in the West African nation's oil-rich southern delta.

Kamene Okonjo, the 83-year-old mother of Nigeria's Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, was kidnapped Sunday afternoon in her hometown of Ogwashi-Uku in Delta State. Okonjo-Iweala, a respected economist, became a finance minister with extensive powers last year. She was also a possible candidate to head the World Bank before losing the position to U.S. nominee Jim Yong Kim.

Police have started a "comprehensive investigation" in the kidnapping, Nigeria police spokesman Frank Mba said Monday. He declined to say if the kidnappers had asked for a ransom.

The finance minister had received threats prior to Sunday's attacks, her spokesman Paul Nwabuikwu said in a statement Sunday. He said it was not clear if the authors of those threats were behind the kidnapping. Okonjo-Iweala was instrumental in pushing through a government policy to end subsidies for gasoline in January, a decision that sparked a nationwide strike and widespread protests in Africa's most populous nation. President Goodluck Jonathan later reinstated a partial subsidy, though many in the nation blamed Okonjo-Iweala for the unpopular decision. She has since said the subsidy must be entirely removed because the country cannot afford it.

"This is obviously a very difficult time for the entire Okonjo family. But the family is hopeful of a positive outcome as it fervently prays for the quick and safe return of the matriarch," the statement read.

In 2006, militants who said Nigeria's oil-producing region was not getting its fair share of the oil wealth started kidnapping foreign oil workers and launching other attacks aimed at crippling Nigeria's oil industry. That violence waned in 2009 with a government-sponsored amnesty program. But it gave way to a new wave of kidnappings that couldn't claim to champion a cause. The average initial ransom demand in 2012 has been $490,000 with settlements averaging $50,000, Houston-based security firm ASI Global said in a recent report, noting that ransom figures are rarely reported and that these averages may be conservative.

The Okonjo kidnapping occurred in an oil-rich Nigerian state considered to be a kidnapping hotspot. Kidnappings in the area once targeted expatriate oil workers, but the focus has increasingly shifted to middle- and upper-class Nigerians.

"There's been a transition in targets from large international companies to wealthy families," said Pete Sharwood-Smith, West Africa manager for United Kingdom-based risk management consultants Drum-Cussac. "It's easier to extort ransom from a family, who is emotionally involved, than a large company that can get trained negotiators to take over the resolution process."

Families and authorities rarely admit to paying ransoms. Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel saw his father freed by authorities in Nigeria last year after being abducted in the central city of Jos, which had not been previously known for kidnappings. Authorities declined to say how the victim was found. The father of Chukwuma Soludo, Nigeria's flamboyant former central bank chief, was seized in 2009 in another kidnapping-prone southern state and freed days later. Authorities denied a ransom had been paid.

Poverty, high unemployment and easy access to arms have created an opportunity for criminal gang to flourish. Corruption has worsened the crisis. Authorities recently accused a top police official in Delta state of helping criminal gangs to kidnap citizens before releasing him.

A lack of faith in authorities' ability to rescue loved ones and fears that they may be bought have led people who can afford it to relocate their families.

Kelechi Ijomah, who lives in Nigeria's commercial capital of Lagos, said she and her siblings had to move their parents two years ago from southern Nigeria's Abia state, which has also seen a spate of kidnappings. Ijomah said it was a difficult adjustment to make for her 87-year-old father, who had an orchard, and her 80-year-old mother, who ran a school.

"You know why you came out here dad," Ijomah said she would remind her nostalgic father. "Nobody will kidnap you here."

Apple award in Samsung patent trial could shrink, judge says

SAN JOSE -- A federal judge Thursday suggested she may trim some of Apple's (AAPL) $1 billion judgment against Samsung in their patent feud, but also signaled that she is inclined to block continued sales of Samsung smartphones and tablets a jury found were copies of the iPhone and iPad.

During three hours of legal sparring, U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh told Apple and Samsung she plans to issue written rulings in the coming weeks to finalize the first stage of their patent battle and to send the case along to a federal appeals court.

Samsung has urged Koh to set aside a jury's stunning August verdict that found the South Korean tech giant copied Apple's popular iPhone and iPad, or at least slash hundreds of millions of dollars from the damages award. Koh told lawyers on both sides she found some of Samsung's arguments to reduce the damages "persuasive," but it remains unclear how she will tinker with the jury's conclusion.

At the same time, Koh appeared receptive to Apple's argument that Samsung should not be allowed to continue selling the older line of smartphones -- such as the Galaxy S2 -- and tablets that were found to have violated its patent rights. Apple has asked for a permanent injunction on those devices.

With another Apple lawsuit pending against Samsung's more recent

products, Koh once again urged both sides to settle their global legal fight.

"I think it's time for global peace," said Koh, who tried to get the two companies to settle before the verdict. "I think it would be good for consumers, it would be good for the industry, I think it would be good for the parties."

Lawyers for Apple and Samsung blamed each other for the failure to settle. Harold McElhinny, Apple's lead attorney, told Koh the $1 billion verdict is a "slap on the wrist" against Samsung if the case doesn't force the company to stop copying.

But Charles Verhoeven, a Samsung attorney, maintained it is up to Apple to stop the "thermonuclear war" it has launched against Samsung in courtrooms around the world.

"The ball is in their court," he said.

At this point, the jury's verdict appears headed for the U.S. Federal Circuit Court of Appeals, which hears all patent appeals. Samsung has vowed to appeal the judgment, and Koh remarked several times during the hearing that she was readying her final rulings for that court.

The judge appeared uninterested in Samsung's argument that the jury's verdict was tainted by the jury foreman, one of many issues raised since the trial. Samsung alleges that Velvin Hogan, the foreman, failed to disclose a previous legal tussle with Seagate Technology that the company maintains rendered him biased.

Meanwhile, if Koh issues a permanent injunction against some of Samsung's older products, Apple is expected to return to court to ask the judge to extend the sales ban to some more recent Samsung smartphones and tablets. Apple has already targeted the popular Galaxy S III, which is topping the sales charts for smartphones.

Social Media, mHealth and Medicine: 2012 in Review and Hopes for ...

Image

Social media is the future of medicine. Patients, providers, pharma and industryare becoming increasingly connected. mHealth (mobile health) is the practice of medicine using technology such as mobile phones, tablet computers and other electronic devices to improve outcomes. As we reflect on 2012 and the changes that have occurred in healthcare, I am astounded by the increasingly significant roles that social media and mHealth are playing in medicine today. As recently as two years ago, small groups of mHealth pioneers were just beginning to consider the use of social media in medicine. The idea of?e-patients (Internet or tech-savvy patients) emerged.

Dr. Tom Ferguson, who authored much of the initial work on online?patient advocacy, defined the?e-patient?as ?equipped, enabled, empowered, and engaged? in their health and health-related decisions. Recent surveys have shown that the number of adults using tablet computers for health-related activities has doubled from 15 million to 29 million in 2012. The Internet has become a primary source of information for many patients. Cyberspace is where our patients are?today?and where we, as leaders in healthcare innovation, need to be?now.

So Where Are We Now?

Looking back on 2012, several innovations in social media and healthcare have developed. Patients are more engaged than ever. Online patient communities have emerged and flourished. Even as big business, major corporations and even the ever-cautious CEOs of Fortune 500 companies slowly start to develop social media personalities, healthcare providers continue to lag behind. The tools for social media interaction continue to develop and improve each day. Medical applications for social media continue to emerge, and I believe there is a great potential patient benefit. These are important points to consider at year?s end:

#1. Active engagement of e-patients.?The?e-patient is now an important consumer of healthcare. These patients are technologically savvy and well informed. Often the?e-patient gathers information on the Internet and is well prepared for office visits.?E-patients are engaged and actively participate in their own healthcare. As healthcare providers, we must not miss this opportunity to educate and market. The?e-patient can be a wonderful source of referrals via electronic recommendations.

#2. Social media for providers.?As healthcare providers, we remain relatively unengaged in social media. A small minority of physicians has continued to engage in social media, utilizing outlets such as Twitter, Facebook, blogging and YouTube. The interaction that I have had this year with my medical colleagues from around the world via social media has been a great learning experience for me. As a profession, physicians are still trying to figure out the best way to leverage social media in our practice; working together with other social media pioneers has allowed me to refine my online presence and improve my skills at blogging and tweeting. For example, electrophysiologist Dr. Wes Fisher has unknowingly served as a social media mentor for me over the last year. I first met Dr. Fisher via Twitter, and then had the pleasure to meet and work with him at Heart Rhythm this year. He has a longstanding, prolific blog that is a great example of how to do things the ?right way.?

#3. Prescription apps.?In the last year, much has been written about the use of ?medical apps.? An article this year in?The New York Times?actually suggested that as more medical apps are developed, physicians may in fact begin to prescribe apps for their patients. Apps may facilitate tracking of medications, blood pressure readings, blood sugars and other relevant medical data. The federal government has created ?contests? or challenges for developers in order to stimulate the design and implementation of healthcare apps in cardiovascular disease. Ultimately, the use of apps will help to further engage patients and improve care. There is much more to come in this area as we look to 2013.

#4. Online communities for support and dissemination of information.?As the?e-patient population continues to grow, more and more healthcare consumers have begun to look to the Internet for information and support. Disease-specific online communities have been developed by pioneering patients. These communities are very active and work to advocate for patient rights as well as help patients understand their disease more fully. By bonding together, patients are able to share information about the best treatments, facilities and providers. Moreover, these communities have become incredibly effective support groups. Interacting with online patient communities via Twitter and other social media outlets has a huge upside for the engaged physician. Online communities will be the way physicians are evaluated and recommended in the future. Twitter chat is the new ?word of mouth.?

#5. Mobile devices.?The majority of Americans now possess a mobile device capable of interacting with the Internet. These devices are fast, powerful and capable of performing multiple tasks at one time. Research by Nielson has shown that 50.4% of Americans have a smartphone, and that smartphone use is becoming more consistent throughout the age groups. No longer is the BlackBerry, iPhone and Android the toys of youth; seniors use them as well. Much has been done to develop ways to use mobile devices to monitor vital signs, electrocardiograms and other biologic statistics in real time. Some implantable cardiac device companies offer cell phones for remote monitoring of devices. The future of mHealth is clearly with the expanded use of mobile devices.

#6. Regulating the medical presence in cyberspace.?As more and more medical applications are created and distributed to patients for patient care activities, there is an increasing concern among lawmakers that harm may come to patients unless there is government oversight. Rep. Mike Honda (D-Calif) has introduced the idea of a new FDA office of mobile health to help monitor and regulate health-related apps. In July, the FDA Safety and Innovation Act established a commission to develop a strategy for regulating mobile health apps. As with most government agencies, I do not expect quick progress in this arena.

Predictions for 2013 and Beyond

As a profession, medicine continues to lag behind other major industries in the adoption of social media. However, change is coming. We must embrace this change and begin to lead. We must help to define the course of the way patients and physicians will interact online today and in the future. Patients, even the elderly, are becoming more tech savvy. The?e-patient is going to be the norm, and we must learn to be comfortable and accessible in cyberspace. The new classroom will be online communities, Twitter chats and blogs. Our role as physicians is rapidly changing. As always in medicine, we must evolve quickly to meet the needs of our patients and improve care. I have identified four key areas in which we must strive to build a greater medical presence in the next year:

#1: Mobile devices, prescription applications to promote increased connectivity between provider and patient.

#2: Online communities should be embraced and developed as well as prescribed. There is an enormous opportunity for these communities to be integrated with providers and healthcare systems.

#3: Discussions and seminars online (through the use of YouTube, podcasts and Twitter chats) to bring patients together with each other and to engage with healthcare providers.

#4: Social media education of healthcare providers. We must recruit new ?players? and continue to shape the way physicians effectively utilize social media.

Although great strides have been made in using social media to improve patient care and outcomes, there is much left to do. We have a long way to go in 2013. A recent survey published onFierceHealthIT?indicated that hospital systems and providers are only using social media in healthcare in very basic ways. Simply put, we are only scratching the surface of great potential. We must go beyond just using social media to listen to consumers and to market. We must evolve our social media utilization into actively engaging patients, disseminating information, connecting patients and providers, and more quickly responding to the rapidly changing needs of the healthcare consumer. The year 2012 has resulted in significant progress, and 2013 holds much promise. Our patients are out there, in cyberspace, waiting for us to join the party. The time is now to jump in with both feet.

Vegetarian Thanksgiving

French Onion Soup
Traditional French onion soup is made with beef broth, but this vegetarian version is so flavorful that meat-eaters will never know the difference!

Potato Soup
A quick and easy recipe for a favorite cold-weather food.

Pumpkin Soup
This spicy soup is a good recipe to use up all of that pumpkin left over from Halloween.

Popovers
Recipe for popovers, perhaps the simplest and quickest way to enjoy fresh bread hot from the oven.

Veggie Loaf
This recipe for veggie burgers spread into a loaf pan and baked for 30-40 minutes makes a great vegetarian "meat" loaf.

Cranberry Sauce
What would Thanksgiving dinner be without this sweet-tart, jelly-like sauce?

Gravy
This simple, nut-based gravy recipe will satisfy your cravings at Thanksgiving or any other time of year.

Mashed Potatoes
Mashed potatoes are the ultimate comfort food. They?re quick and easy and the soft texture makes me feel like a kid. They?re also a great base for all kinds of variations like vegan mashed potatoes and garlic mashed potatoes.

Mashed Sweet Potatoes
Looking for a tasty alternative to regular mashed potatoes? Try mashed sweet potatoes (aka yams).

Mushroom Sauce
A vegan mushroom sauce that works well with bean dishes and pasta, and can be thickened to make mushroom gravy.

Red Cabbage with Cranberries
A sweet-and-sour side dish that will brighten your table at Thanksgiving or any time of the year.

Roasted Winter Squash
An easy-to-prepare, delicate sweet-and-sour squash dish.

Stuffed Sweet Potatoes
Make the most of the sweet potatoes available in winter ? these stuffed sweet potatoes are sweet and buttery.

Stuffing
Stuffing doesn?t have to be cooked inside a turkey ? this vegetarian bread stuffing with apples and walnuts is delicious baked as a casserole.
?

Dessert

Apple Pie
I can?t think of a better way to celebrate autumn than with a homemade apple pie.

Cranberry-Nut Bread
A sweet-tart bread that is equally good for dessert, tea, or breakfast.

Cranberry Tart
I don?t know about the rest of the world, but in the United States, November is cranberry season. Here?s another tasty way to enjoy cranberries.

Pecan Pie
The richest and most delicious pecan pie you?ll ever taste.

Pumpkin Cheesecake
Creamy, rich, and not-too-sweet pumpkin cheesecake is a perfect Thanksgiving dessert.

Pumpkin Pie
This "no-fault" pumpkin pie is the perfect end to Thanksgiving dinner.

Sweet Potato Pie
This lovely pie is sweet but not too sweet, so you can eat it as a Thanksgiving side dish or dessert.
?

Tips

Adaptable Recipes
Meals with a mixed group of vegetarians and non-vegetarians can require a lot of extra effort from the cook. However, you can save a lot of work by making similar dishes for both groups ? a vegetarian version and a meat version. Here are some vegetarian recipes that lend themselves easily to meat additions.

Dealing with Vegetarians
If you?re not a vegetarian, the thought of cooking for or eating with someone who is may seem rather daunting. In fact, it?s really not that difficult, if you follow a few simple guidelines and use common sense.

One in four physicians uses social media daily

ScienceDaily (Dec. 7, 2012) ? A new survey shows that about one in four physicians uses social media daily or multiple times a day to scan or explore medical information, and 14 percent use social media each day to contribute new information, according to an oncologist at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center.

The survey of 485 oncologists and primary care physicians, also found that on a weekly basis or more, 61 percent of physicians scan for information and 46 percent contribute new information. More than half said they use online physician-only communities but only 7 percent said they use Twitter. The work was published recently in the Journal of Medical Internet Research.

Oncologists are more likely to use social media to keep up with innovation, while primary care physicians are more likely to use social media to get in touch with peers and learn from them, the survey found.

Since the survey was conducted a year and a half ago, it's likely that more physicians are using social media now, says Robert S. Miller, M.D., an assistant professor of oncology and oncology medical information officer at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center. The amount of information required for medical practice is growing exponentially, he says, and social media provides "a very valid construct for physicians to keep current."

"What did surprise us was the heavy use of online physician-only communities," Miller says. "It's possible that many physicians feel more comfortable with that type of social media instead of a more public space like Twitter or Facebook."

In March 2011, Miller and colleagues e-mailed the survey, about attitudes and usage of social media, to a random sample of 1,695 practicing oncologists and primary care physicians found among the American Medical Association's Physician Masterfile. Social media was defined as "Internet-based applications that allow for the creation and exchange of user-generated content, including social networking, professional online communities, wikis, blogs and microblogging."

Of 485 practicing physicians who responded, nearly sixty percent said social media is beneficial, engaging and good way to get current, high-quality information (279 respondents); enables them to care for patients more efficiently (281 respondents); and improves the quality of patient care they deliver (291 respondents). What influenced a physician's usage of social media most were perceived ease of use and usefulness. Physicians who had positive attitudes toward social media were more likely to use it. Neither age nor gender affected use of social media.

More studies are needed to determine how social media impacts physicians' knowledge, attitudes, skills and behaviors, and its usage among other populations of health care professionals, Miller says.

The study originated from a common interest in social media among Miller and his co-investigators Brian S. McGowan, Ph.D., Molly Wasko, Ph.D., and Bryan Steven Vartabedian, M.D. Funding for the study was provided by an unrestricted educational grant from Pfizer through McGowan, the lead investigator, who previously was Pfizer's Director of Oncology Medical Education and is now a medical education consultant and blogger. The research was conducted independently from the funding organization.

Coauthors were Brian S. McGowan, Ph.D., of Blue Bell, Pa.; Molly Wasko, Ph.D., of the University of Alabama; Bryan Steven Vartabedian, M.D., of Baylor College of Medicine; and Desirae D. Freiherr and Maziar Abdolrasulnia, Ph.D., of CE Outcomes, LLC, of Birmingham, Ala.

Syrians want to know: 'Are you okay after Superstorm Sandy?'

With the sound of mortars in the background, Syrians in Aleppo express concern for our American correspondent and his storm-battered homeland.

By Tom A. Peter,?Correspondent / November 18, 2012

Syrian women work on their field in the village of Tarafat, Syria in October. Many Syrians have expressed concern for Americans hit by hurricane Sandy.

Manu Brabo/AP

I had just sat down to interview a commander of the Free Syrian Army in Aleppo and we were exchanging the normal pre-meeting pleasantries as some distant gunfire cracked in the background. After 20 months of conflict here, most artillery and gunfire goes unnoticed unless people are close enough to be directly affected.

With this as the backdrop for our interview, I was taken off guard when he asked if my friends and family were all right after Superstorm Sandy.

As a Californian living abroad, I was aware of Sandy. I had seen a few pictures of the aftermath, but I hadn?t even followed the Sandy news close enough to know that it had been classified as a ?superstorm,? as a opposed to a hurricane. Yet here was a man whose nation is being torn apart by a violent civil war that had claimed the lives of several friends and tens of thousands of Syrians, and he?d been following Sandy news.

I initially thought the comment was a one off, a lone hurricane watcher, perhaps he was a Syrian with an interest in meteorology. Yet it has happened again and again and everyone who asks knows that it was a superstorm, not a hurricane.

Working in the midst of a war like Syria, it?s easy to assume that for those involved the conflict, the situation is their entire life and there is little time for details, like a destructive storm thousands of miles away. But Superstorm Sandy is just one of the odd questions about America you might encounter in Syria as people try to take a mental break from the war.

One night, I found myself with a group of FSA fighters watching Jumanji on an Arabic movie station that gives Arabic subtitles. We got into a debate about whether the child actress in the film was a young Drew Barrymore or someone else. (It was a teenage Kirsten Dunst.)

A few days later, I sparked a heated discussion when I jokingly asked a Syrian activist wearing a glove on only one hand if it was a tribute to Michael Jackson. The person wearing the glove argued that while Michael?s music was impossible not to enjoy, it had been tainted by the scandals surrounding his personal life. His friend argued that art is not defined by the artist and Michael Jackson remains hands down one of the best singers ever, regardless of what happened off stage.

In all the conflicts I have ever covered, I find myself in these conversations.?Everyone tries to hold on to a normal world of news and pop culture to take them beyond their current hardships.

South Africa military plane crashes in mountains

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? A South African military aircraft on an unknown mission to an area near former President Nelson Mandela's village crashed in a mountain range, officials said Thursday. It was unclear whether there were any survivors.

The Douglas C-47TP Dakota, a twin-propeller aircraft, had taken off from Pretoria's Waterkloof Air Force Base on Wednesday morning, said Brig. Gen. Xolani Mabanga, a military spokesman. The aircraft met bad weather in flight and failed to make its 10 a.m. landing.

On Thursday morning, soldiers found the wreckage of the airplane in the Drakensberg mountains near Ladysmith in KwaZulu-Natal province, some 340 kilometers (210 miles) southeast of the air base, Mabanga said. The Drakensberg, which in the local Afrikaans language means Dragon Mountains, have the highest peaks in South Africa, reaching to a height of about 3,400 meters (11,400 feet).

Mabanga said soldiers had been sent to the scene to look for survivors. Mabanga said he did not know what the mission of the aircraft was. Its destination was Mthatha in the country's Eastern Cape. Siphiwe Dlamini, a Defense Ministry spokesman, declined to comment Thursday morning.

Mthatha is about 30 kilometers (17 miles) north of Qunu, the village where Mandela now lives after retiring from public life. South Africa's military remains largely responsible for the former president's medical care. However, military officials declined to say whether those on board had any part in caring for Mandela.

In November, another South African military flight crash landed at Mthatha, sending several people to the hospital with injuries.

Mandela, 94, was imprisoned for nearly three decades for his fight against apartheid before becoming the nation's president in the country's first fully democratic vote in 1994.

Wisconsin turns to former coach for the Rose Bowl

MADISON, Wis. (AP) ? When Wisconsin linebacker Mike Taylor was a kid, he used to watch the Badgers and dream of playing for Barry Alvarez.

He's finally getting his wish.

The Badgers are going retro for the Rose Bowl, talking Alvarez ? their former football coach-turned athletic director ? into returning to the sidelines on New Year's Day against Stanford after Bret Bielema bolted for Arkansas this week.

"It's the best thing that could happen," Taylor said Thursday after Alvarez's return was announced. "He's familiar with what we do and he built this program. That's why kids like me come here."

But this is a one-night-only gig, Alvarez insisted. He's already looking for a replacement for Bret Bielema, and plans to begin interviewing candidates next week.

"No one likes change, but you can grow through change and there's opportunity through change," Alvarez said. "I want the seniors to go out the right way, and I want the young players to understand that I will put a coach in place that they'll be pleased with."

It won't, however, be Paul Chryst.

The first-year Pitt coach was considered the favorite to replace Bielema, a former Badgers offensive coordinator who is from the area, has many ties here and remains a popular figure at Wisconsin. Alvarez pulled some strings to help get Chryst the Panthers job last year, and said it wouldn't be "appropriate" for him to hire Chryst back such a short time later.

Chryst says he is committed to the Panthers, who are preparing for the BBVA Compass Bowl on Jan. 5.

"I think he should be committed to Pitt," Alvarez said. "I wouldn't think it would be right for him to leave after one year. I wouldn't feel right, and I don't think it would be appropriate for me to hire him back after I asked someone to do me a favor and help him get that job. So Paul's going to stay at Pitt."

But there is no shortage of interest in the job, Alvarez said. His phone was "blowing up" as soon as word spread that Bielema was leaving, and Alvarez said he's already talked to a few potential candidates. He will not use a search firm, joking that "most search committees use me."

A current head coach is his preference, though Alvarez would not rule out hiring an assistant. Wisconsin ties are not required, but Alvarez said the new coach needs to be familiar with the program and its history.

"I think anyone that's competitive understands this is a good job," Alvarez said. "They're not going to worry about my legacy or what Bret left behind or anything else. They know this is a good job and they can come in here and continue to win. We've got new facilities coming. This is a pretty special place."

And Alvarez is largely to thank for that.

Wisconsin was little more than a Big Ten bottom feeder when Alvarez arrived in 1990. The Badgers had all of six winning seasons from 1964-89, and went 19 years without another bowl appearance after losing to USC in the 1963 Rose Bowl. They were such a sorry bunch that the Wisconsin band's postgame show was the main attraction at Camp Randall, with students rarely bothering to show up until halftime or later.

But Alvarez came with stingy defense, a power running game and a massive offense line ? "those big palookas up front," he said Thursday ? that would soon become the standard in both college and the pros. The Badgers had a Big Ten-record 10 straight seasons with a 1,000-yard rusher under Alvarez, and Ron Dayne became the school's second Heisman Trophy winner in 1999.

Four years after taking over, Alvarez led the Badgers to a 10-1-1 record, a No. 4 ranking and the 1994 Rose Bowl. Wisconsin has had only two losing seasons since then.

Alvarez's 118-73-4 record in 16 seasons includes a 3-0 mark in the Rose Bowl ? Wisconsin's only victories in eight trips to Pasadena. He was inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame in 2009.

"It's a special place," Alvarez said. "I love the atmosphere. I love the week leading up to it. There isn't anything that I enjoy more. With this being our third (straight) appearance and the Hall of Fame, this is my fourth year in a row and I love it. It doesn't get a bit old to me. I will enjoy every second of it."

As will the Badgers.

Bielema's departure was a shock, coming just three days after Wisconsin earned a school-record third straight trip to the Rose Bowl with a 70-31 rout of Nebraska in the Big Ten championship. The coach even told players at a Monday night meeting not to believe rumors he was going somewhere, quarterback Curt Phillips said.

Once Bielema left, there was no question who the Badgers wanted as their interim coach.

"Looking forward to being coached by one of the greatest of all time In my last game as a badger! Let's go get em!" running back Montee Ball said on Twitter.

Alvarez has been something of a coach emeritus the last seven years. Bielema was his hand-picked successor, and he stuck close to the framework Alvarez had established. Alvarez attended most practices, and often helped to woo recruits.

"When anyone around this program simply says 'coach', you know who they're talking about," Chris Borland tweeted.

So for him to step back in for the Rose Bowl will mean very little change for the Badgers. Alvarez said he will oversee practices and manage the game, allowing the coordinators to focus on game planning against the Cardinal.

The assistants have told players they are committed to Wisconsin through the Rose Bowl.

"I think this is probably the best," Alvarez said. "I felt this was the best way to go about it and give the players the best opportunity" to win.

And, make no mistake, the Badgers intend to keep Alvarez's perfect Rose Bowl record intact.

More than a few people have said the Badgers have no business being in the Rose Bowl at 8-5. Wisconsin actually finished third in the Big Ten's Leaders Division, but Ohio State and Penn State are ineligible for the postseason because of NCAA sanctions.

But Alvarez said Wisconsin has nothing to apologize for.

"I told (the players) I would be honored to coach them," Alvarez said. "But I wanted them to understand, if I was going to coach them, we weren't going to screw around. We were going to go out there to win."
